What does “independently tested” mean in cosmetics?

“Independently tested” means an outside laboratory evaluated a defined product, ingredient, or regimen using a stated method, duration, sample, endpoint, and result.

The phrase is useful only when the reader can see what was tested and how. It does not automatically mean publication, peer review, medical evaluation, or that one result describes every related formula.

For a shopper, the payoff is confidence: a concise visible benefit can lead straight to the study behind it.
