What Does Sugar Do in a Scalp Scrub?

Sugar (Sucrose) granules give a scalp scrub its physical job: they gently lift dead surface cells, excess oil, dirt and styling buildup, then dissolve as you massage. SeneGence used them, with cooling Menthol, in Deep Cleansing Scalp Scrub, which is no longer available from SeneGence.

Why put sugar in a scalp scrub?

Sometimes the clever choice is the texture itself. Sugar granules let a gentle massage lift what has collected on the scalp: dead surface cells, oil and styling-product residue.

Sucrose is used in cosmetic science for moisture-related and skin-conditioning functions, while the granules in the discontinued Deep Cleansing Scalp Scrub did a physical job: exfoliating surface buildup. The European Commission’s Sucrose entry describes its general cosmetic functions.

Joni Rogers-Kante’s search for life that thrives in extremes began the research behind SenePlex+®, and the scrub carried its yeast-and-kelp pairing into scalp care. Follow Joni’s Vanuatu orchid story.

What did each part of the blend contribute?

Sucrose supplied the sugar granules for gentle physical exfoliation of dead skin cells, dirt, oil and product buildup.

Menthol supplied the cool, refreshing sensation, a different job from the granules’ exfoliation.

Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract helped protect against oxidative stress and clear product and oil buildup while soothing and calming the scalp.

Sarcosine is an amino acid that helped reduce oil and supported a healthy scalp microbiome.

The formula also carried Laminaria Digitata (Kelp) Extract and Saccharomyces Cerevisiae (Yeast) Extract, the yeast-and-kelp pairing in SenePlex+®, alongside Sodium Hyaluronate and Panthenol in its moisturizing and hydrating care.

Hydrolyzed Jojoba Esters brought film-forming and hair-conditioning care; Jojoba Esters contributed emollience and moisture care. Explore Hydrolyzed Jojoba Esters and Jojoba Esters.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine and Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate provided sulfate-free cleansing while the granules worked. Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Sodium Hyaluronate and Panthenol supplied conditioning and moisture, and Glucosamine HCl has cosmetic hair-conditioning and antistatic functions.

What can I use for scalp care now?

Deep Cleansing Scalp Scrub is no longer available from SeneGence. For oil-prone roots today, HairBalance® Shampoo cleanses and purifies without stripping the hair of its natural oils: massage into wet hair and scalp, rinse thoroughly, and follow with HairBalance Conditioner for optimal results.

Where can I check the sugar’s role?

The European Commission’s CosIng Sucrose entry identifies Sucrose’s moisture-related, skin-conditioning and soothing functions in cosmetic science. An ingredient’s name and its physical form both matter: in a scrub, the granule does the work.

Is the cool feeling the exfoliation?

No. In Deep Cleansing Scalp Scrub, which is no longer available, Menthol gave the cool sensation and Sucrose granules supplied the physical exfoliation, two different jobs.

Will a sugar scrub scratch my scalp?

Sucrose granules dissolve as you massage, which is why sugar suits a gentle scalp scrub.

Is Deep Cleansing Scalp Scrub discontinued?

Yes. Deep Cleansing Scalp Scrub is no longer available from SeneGence. For oil-prone roots, HairBalance® Shampoo cleanses and purifies without stripping the hair of its natural oils.
