The Vanuatu Orchid Legend: How Mount Yasur Inspired SenePlex+®

Before SenePlex+® became a name on a bottle, there was a founder with a question.

Eighty-three islands lie across the South Pacific like emeralds thrown onto blue silk. This is Vanuatu, 1,750 kilometers east of Australia. On one of its islands, Tanna, a mountain has erupted continuously for eight hundred years with a sound the local Melanesian people call the voice of the earth. Mount Yasur never sleeps. It erupts again and again, sometimes every few minutes; at night its glow turns the clouds orange, and by day its ash drifts across the island like gray snow.

Joni Rogers-Kante had founded SeneGence in 1999 with LipSense® Long-Lasting Liquid Lip Color, a flexible, breathable color film that holds until removed. If color could perform this way, what else was possible? In the summer of 2000 she came to the caldera of the Volcano, Mt. Yasur, on Tanna in Vanuatu, with a team of scientists and botanists. She was not there for the spectacle. She carried one question:

How does life flourish in conditions designed to destroy it?

She was not chasing an exotic name for a label. She was looking in nature for what survives harsh conditions, so she could bring that resilience into the SeneGence product line. Sifting through the ash at the volcano’s base, among plants adapted to thrive there, Joni practiced bioprospecting: the systematic search for natural compounds that possess specific biological activity.

What Joni did there in the summer of 2000 cannot be repeated: the world has since been explored and harvested, and a search like hers belonged to its moment.

By every ordinary rule, the ground around the caldera should have been barren. Sulfur rode the wind, ash covered the soil, temperatures swung by tens of degrees within hours, and the sun never let up. Instead the land was lush, with greener leaves and deeper roots than gentler places grow, and damaged plants recovered faster. Life had turned a hostile world into a source of strength. Around that one caldera, Joni’s search returned three answers that work together in balance: one to clear, one to renew and one to protect.

The first answer came from the ground, and it clears. The ash around Mount Yasur begins as molten rock flung into the sky and cooled in the air; as the wind carries the plume away from the crater, heavier fragments fall first and finer grains travel on. Those fine, near-spherical grains polish across skin rather than scraping it, lifting away dulling debris and dead surface cells. The local Melanesian people had long used that ash to purify their skin. The second answer came from the flowers, and it mattered most: it renews. Orchids are delicate almost everywhere else on earth, yet near Mount Yasur certain orchids endured heat, acid and ash and repaired their damaged tissue with remarkable speed, driven by signaling compounds held within their own cells. The third answer came from the trees, and it protects. In the dry, heated land around Mount Yasur, plants fight desiccation, the loss of water that kills most plants in extreme heat. The team turned to the nut of the Canarium indicum tree: the Nangai tree, known across the islands as the Vanuatu almond. For generations, Pacific Islanders had used its oil to nourish their skin and hair through harsh tropical conditions. The tree had evolved to produce an oil that could seal and protect against volcanic heat, and on skin it performs the same quiet work: sealing in moisture and helping block environmental stress.
