How to Write Cosmetic Appearance Claims
Lead with the result she can see, name the exact product that delivers it, and let one true reason carry the rest. That is the whole rule.
section 01
Name the Result, Then Name the Product That Delivers It
why it matters
product value & fit
She is not asking what is in it. She is asking what her face will look like at four o'clock.
So answer that. MakeSense Silk Primer & Pore Minimizer blurs the look of enlarged pores, absorbs excess oil, mattifies, and gives foundation an even surface to glide over. Every word of that is something she can check in a mirror by lunchtime.
Then give her one reason, not five. The primer takes the shine down before color goes on, which is why the finish still looks even hours later.
Result first. Product by its full name. One reason. Everything after that is decoration.
how to use itselection, application & troubleshooting
Listen for the result she names, then build the sentence in four beats:
- DESIRE
- what she wants changed
- RESULT
- the visible payoff
- PRODUCT
- the exact formula, by its full name
- REASON
- one thing that makes the payoff believable
Say it once, then hand her the product and show the amount. Cosmetic vs Drug Claims in Beauty runs the same four beats through three products.
the scienceformula · mechanism · evidence
A claim is a small machine with four moving parts. The subject names what acts, the verb names the change, the object names where the change lands, and the qualifier sets the size of the promise.
Move one part and the whole proposition moves with it. "Softens the look of lines" and "erases lines" share a topic and promise entirely different things. The qualifiers are not padding: "helps," "the look of" and "up to" are load-bearing, and deleting one does not shorten the claim, it builds a bigger one.
section 02
Change the Verb. Keep the Benefit.
why it matters
product value & fit
Nothing goes wrong at the front of the sentence. She wants plumper-looking skin, and that is a perfectly good thing to want. It goes wrong at the verb.
Sodium Hyaluronate is a humectant: it draws water and holds it in the upper layers of skin, so the surface looks cushioned and fine lines look softer. Say that and you have said something true, specific and appealing.
Say "rebuilds" or "repairs" or "heals" and you have promised something about tissue that no cosmetic gets to promise, and that she cannot check anyway.
The want stays. The verb moves. That is the entire edit.
how to use itselection, application & troubleshooting
When a draft starts to sound biological, keep the goal and move the promise. "Supports firmer-looking skin," "helps skin look renewed" and "leaves skin feeling comfortable" all survive her own inspection in a mirror. If she is asking about collagen production or clearing a breakout, answer the beauty question and hand the body question to a professional who is allowed to take it.
the scienceformula · mechanism · evidence
There is no list of forbidden verbs, which is why lists of forbidden verbs keep failing. Meaning lives in the whole proposition: "supports" overreaches when its object is a disease, and "improves" is exact when its object is a measured appearance.
The second test is scope. A study on an ingredient describes that ingredient under the conditions it was tested in. A sentence about the finished formula needs support for the finished formula, at its concentration, in its vehicle, applied the way the directions say. Elegant wording cannot promote one level of testing into another.
section 03
Absorbs, Spreads, Layers, Finishes: Words She Can Watch
why it matters
product value & fit
"It penetrates deep to repair" is the sentence you reach for when you have run out of true ones.
Here is what she can actually watch. Evening Moisturizer goes on richer than a daytime cream, spreads without dragging, settles while you are still talking, and leaves the face feeling cushioned rather than coated. Tell her that and she can confirm every word before she leaves.
Depth is a claim about where a molecule went. Absorption, spread, layering and finish are claims about what she saw. Only one of those is yours to make.
how to use itselection, application & troubleshooting
During application, narrate only what she can see or feel: the amount, the spread, the settling time, the layering, the finish. Replace "penetrates deep to repair" with "absorbs quickly and leaves skin feeling smooth," then prove it on the back of her hand. An esthetician can demonstrate that sentence in ten seconds. Nobody can demonstrate a depth claim at all.
the scienceformula · mechanism · evidence
Absorption, permeation and penetration are three words for three different events, and they are not interchangeable. How far a material moves through a barrier depends on molecular size, polarity, concentration, the vehicle carrying it, how much is applied, how long it stays there, and the condition of the barrier itself.
A laboratory result for an isolated ingredient establishes none of that for a finished cream. So product language stays with measured delivery where a measurement exists, and otherwise with what is observable: spread, dry-down, surface feel and appearance.
section 04
A Number Without Its Product Is Just a Number
why it matters
product value & fit
A precise result is the most persuasive thing you own, and the easiest thing to ruin.
It stays persuasive only while the whole result travels together: which product was tested, what was measured, when it was measured, how it was qualified, and where anyone can go and read it. Drop one of those and you are no longer quoting a study, you are quoting a rumor that happens to have a number in it.
C-Bright Dark Spot Corrector has its own result, measured on its own formula. Never lend that result to a neighboring product, never round it up, and never hand one client's outcome to the next client as a forecast.
how to use itselection, application & troubleshooting
Before you use a number, check five things: the exact product, the measurement, the timing, the qualifier, and the source. Say the complete result beside the product that was actually tested, then say what it means for her routine. The whole record sits one click away, so send her there rather than paraphrasing it: C-Bright Clinical. Practice the wording in Say This, Not That.
the scienceformula · mechanism · evidence
A number is a compressed description of a study. Product identity, endpoint, timing and qualification say what was measured; method, sample, comparator and source say how the measurement was produced. Change one field and you have described a different study.
That is why a short customer sentence can still be exact. Carry the fields that define the claim and let the link carry the design. What she wants at the counter is the finding. What she wants at midnight, on her phone, is the whole thing, and that is what the link is for.
