Product Claims & Source Literacy
How to Answer Unsafe Skincare Claim Questions
Five hard questions, answered in the first line. Say the plain thing, give her the strongest beauty truth you actually have, and hand the rest to the right professional.
section 01
"Will this cure my acne or eczema?"
why it matters
product value & fit
"A dermatologist should look at the condition itself. What I can do is help your skin look clearer and feel more comfortable while you get that sorted."
That answer costs you nothing. It is honest, it is useful, and it goes straight to the part you can actually help with: cleansing, comfort and a fresher-looking finish, starting with the 3-in-1 Cleanser.
The sentence people get wrong is the one that tries to keep both. "It clears up acne, cosmetically speaking" is not a smaller claim. It is the same claim with a hedge stapled on.
how to use itselection, application & troubleshooting
Acknowledge the concern, send diagnosis and treatment to a qualified healthcare professional, then come back to the beauty goal. Ask what she wants help with: cleansing, comfort, hydration, or a clearer-looking finish. Choose inside that brief, demonstrate the amount, give her the directions, and stop. Do not interpret what you are looking at, and do not predict how it will go.
the scienceformula · mechanism · evidence
Diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment and prevention all describe a use aimed at a disease, and adding an appearance phrase to a sentence does not move it out of that category. "Clears acne, cosmetically" still promises action on acne.
What stays available is everything a cosmetic is actually judged on: appearance, feel, cleansing, hydration, application and finish. That is not a consolation prize. It is the reason she is standing in front of you, and it is the only ground where you get to be both enthusiastic and correct.
section 02
"Is this FDA approved?"
why it matters
product value & fit
"Cosmetics are not approved before they go on sale. Nothing on this counter is. Let me show you what this product does have behind it."
Then show her: the ingredient list, the directions, and whatever testing belongs to that exact formula. LipSense Long-Lasting Liquid Lip Color is the easy one to demonstrate, because the color additives in it are the one category that is reviewed before sale.
She did not ask because she distrusts you. She asked because nobody has ever answered it plainly.
how to use itselection, application & troubleshooting
Answer it flat: cosmetics and cosmetic ingredients are not approved before sale. The exception is color additives for their intended use, other than those intended for coal-tar hair dyes. Then move to what you can put in her hands, which is the exact product, its ingredient list, its directions, and any testing that belongs to that finished formula. Use the precise word for the support you have.
the scienceformula · mechanism · evidence
Approval and evidence answer different questions. A finished cosmetic is not cleared in advance the way a drug is, and the color-additive exception keeps its own intended-use limits and its own coal-tar hair-dye qualification.
The words people use as synonyms are not synonyms. Tested, third-party tested, published, peer reviewed and approved describe five different states of the world. Reach for the one that is true and say only that one. "We have a study on this formula" is a smaller sentence than "approved" and a far stronger one, because it survives being checked.
section 03
"Is this safe for pregnancy, sensitive skin, or my condition?"
why it matters
product value & fit
"That one needs your doctor, not me. What I can give you is the exact ingredient list and the directions, so the conversation you have with her is a specific one."
Then hand it over. Every SeneGence container and product page carries the full ingredient list, which turns a vague worry into a page a professional can read in half a minute.
Nobody loses a sale this way. A woman who is told the truth about what you can and cannot answer comes back with a blessing and a bigger basket.
how to use itselection, application & troubleshooting
Do not turn a beauty consultation into a personal safety assessment. Show the exact ingredient list and the directions, ask her to take them to the right healthcare professional, and wait for that answer before you sell into it. Once the boundary is set you are still useful: texture, finish, placement, order, and any patch-test directions the label provides.
the scienceformula · mechanism · evidence
Whether a formula suits one person depends on the finished formula, how much is used, how often, where it goes, the state of her barrier, what she has reacted to before, what she is taking, and what else is happening in her health. The presence of an ingredient predicts none of that on its own.
Pregnancy, a diagnosed condition, an earlier reaction or a prescription question all need individual clinical judgment. What product education can supply is exact: the ingredient list, the directions, and what the formula is for.
section 04
"Will I get the same result?"
why it matters
product value & fit
"Maybe. Skin and routines vary. Here is what the study found, here is what one client of mine saw, and here is why I think it fits you."
That answer is more persuasive than a guarantee, because she has already decided not to believe a guarantee.
A SeneGence study describes what happened to a group under set conditions. A testimonial describes what happened to one woman. Both are worth saying. Neither is a forecast, and pretending otherwise is how a happy customer becomes a disappointed one.
how to use itselection, application & troubleshooting
Separate the two before you recommend anything. Say what the tested product or routine showed, name the testimonial as one person's experience, and never guarantee the next outcome. Then choose for her routine and her preferences, show the amount and the order, and set a check-in that matches the directions and the tested use period.
the scienceformula · mechanism · evidence
A study and a testimonial answer different questions. A study reports a product or routine, an endpoint, a population and the conditions it ran under. A testimonial reports one person.
An exceptional story quietly implies a typical one unless the generally expected result is stated beside it. Variation stops being an excuse and becomes useful the moment it is attached to something real: where her skin started, how consistently she used the product, how much she applied, what else was in the routine, and whether the thing being judged was measured or looked at.
section 05
"Can I stop my prescription if I use this?"
why it matters
product value & fit
"That is a question for whoever prescribed it. Nothing I sell replaces a prescription. Once you have that answer, I am very good at the rest."
Say it quickly and say it warmly, because hesitation here reads as doubt about the product. It is not. It is the one place where being useful means stepping back.
Then step forward again. Evening Moisturizer at the close of the night, the right order, the right amount, and a face that looks better in the morning. That part is entirely yours.
how to use itselection, application & troubleshooting
Use the same three beats every time a hard question lands:
- ANSWER
- say the plain thing first
- BRIDGE
- give the strongest supported beauty truth you have
- HAND OFF
- send diagnosis, treatment, prescriptions and personal safety to the right professional
Then go back to product choice, application and follow-up without inflating anything. The Golden Rule of Claims is where the wording gets built.
the scienceformula · mechanism · evidence
Diagnosis, treatment selection, dose, interactions and any change to prescribed care all require individual medical judgment, and visible improvement is not evidence that a condition or a prescription has changed. A cosmetic that made skin look better has made skin look better.
The reasoning is the same for every hard question. Work out what she wants confirmed, decide whether it is a beauty question or a body question, say what the product and its testing can answer, and route the rest. After the referral, documented directions and supported cosmetic results are still entirely fair game. Symptom reading and compatibility predictions never were.
