Ask What the Lip Is For Before You Pull a Single LipSense Shade

Nobody walks in wanting a shade. They walk in wanting to look a particular way at a particular moment.
So ask about the moment. Where is this lip going, and how much of the room should notice? Soft or bold, warm or cool, polished or playful, one hour or the whole evening. Ask which color she already owns and reaches for, because that one is a preference she has already tested on herself.
Then say the brief back to her before you open anything: the occasion, the intensity, the finish. If she nods, you have a target. If she corrects you, you have a better one.

Take the Finalist to a Window Before She Decides

Appointment lighting flatters. That is what it is for, and it is also why shades get returned.
Before anything is decided, walk the finished LipSense lip to a window. In natural daylight she sees what she will see in the car, at work, and in every photograph anybody takes of her that evening. Judge the whole face and neck, not a stripe on the back of a hand.
Then let her read it first. Ask what she sees before you say what you see, because the first opinion in the room tends to become the only one.

Move her to a window or a neutral, high-quality source before the finalist is confirmed, and read the lip against the full complexion rather than a hand swatch. If the look is for an event or a shoot, check it on camera as well. Ask for her read first, then add yours.

Two things shift a lip's apparent color: the spectrum of the light and the white balance the eye or the camera settles on. Her own lip pigment shifts it again, because thin translucent layers transmit as much as they cover. Daylight removes the first source of error and confirming on the lip removes the second. Record the exact recommendation
