What is extremophile skincare?

Quick answer

Extremophile skincare draws on life that thrives where conditions should destroy it, and for SeneGence the search began in the summer of 2000 at the caldera of the Volcano, Mt. Yasur, on Tanna in Vanuatu. SenePlex+®, our foundational proprietary anti-aging complex at work in most of our products, is our extremophile technology, made with extracts and cells that survive in extreme environments. Today our formulas carry six true extremophiles, from a bacterium that grows beneath a Swiss glacier to spirulina, the alga that thrives in alkaline soda lakes, alongside four ingredients that carry the Mount Yasur story.

How do SeneGence’s ingredient origins differ?

SeneGence draws on true extremophile science, the Mount Yasur story and ingredients from the world’s hardest places.

True extremophiles and SenePlex+®SenePlex+®, our foundational proprietary anti-aging complex at work in most of our products, is our extremophile technology. Our formulas also carry six true extremophiles, one for each extreme: Swiss glacier bacteria for cold, deep-sea vent Alteromonas for heat and pressure, Rio Tinto Bacillus for acid, Es Trenc Bacillus for salt, spirulina for alkaline soda lakes and the resurrection plant for drought.SenePlex+® · Alteromonas Ferment Extract · Bacillus Ferment · Spirulina · The resurrection plant
The Mount Yasur storyFour of our ingredients carry the Mount Yasur story: Volcanic Ash, selected about 1.5 km downwind of Mount Yasur’s active vent, which polishes in Facial Resurfacer; Calanthe Discolor (Ebine) Extract, our orchid stem cells, at work in 48 SeneGence products; Orchis Mascula (Orchid) Flower Extract, SenePlex+®'s second orchid; and Canarium Indicum (Nangai) Seed Oil, from the Nangai tree that evolved an oil to seal and protect against volcanic heat, which leads Nangai Oil.The Vanuatu legend · How the ash is selected · Calanthe orchid stem cells · Nangai Oil’s formula

From the caldera of the Volcano, Mt. Yasur

In the summer of 2000, Joni Rogers-Kante searched the caldera of the Volcano, Mt. Yasur, on Tanna in Vanuatu, for what survives harsh conditions so she could bring it into the product line. Volcanic ash, the caldera orchid that inspired SenePlex+® and Nangai seed oil carry that story into Facial Resurfacer, SenePlex+® skincare and Nangai Oil. Read the full Vanuatu orchid legend.

Which SeneGence ingredients come from true extremophiles?

Six of our ingredients come from life that survives where almost nothing else can, one for each extreme.

Is SenePlex+ an extremophile technology?

Yes. SenePlex+® is made with extracts and cells that survive in extreme environments. Its two orchids were inspired by the orchids of the Mount Yasur caldera, and its biofermented yeast and kelp join Hydrolyzed Opuntia Ficus-Indica (Prickly Pear) Flower Extract, from a desert cactus that stores water in its pads and breathes at night to survive heat and drought. In a 20-day independent clinical study of 33 women ages 19–65, measured by expert clinical grading compared with baseline, Evening Moisturizer – Normal to Dry with SenePlex+® and orchid stem cells accelerated skin cell renewal by 35.7%. Which SeneGence ingredients come from the world’s hardest places?

Beyond the true extremophiles, our formulas draw on algae, plants and minerals shaped by snow, fire, lava and drought.

  • A green alga that thrives in snow. Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Extract comes from a green alga known for thriving in extreme environments, even snow; in Collagen Firming Night Pak, its algae-derived lipids replenish hydration and improve luminosity. See Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Extract. See what Collagen Firming Night Pak does.
  • Sea Water with arctic-grown microalgae. Collagen Firming Night Pak pairs Sea Water with microalgae grown in harsh arctic conditions; this microalgae and mineral-rich seawater complex helps seal in moisture and supports skin firmness. See the Night Pak formula.
  • Golden root from the Arctic and high mountains. Rhodiola Rosea Root Extract comes from golden root, a plant native across subarctic and subalpine regions; in Detoxifying Oxygen Facial Mask, it supports skin’s natural defenses against harsh environmental factors and helps the complexion look more even and radiant. See Rhodiola in the oxygen mask.
  • Fireweed, first to return after an eruption. Epilobium Angustifolium (Willow Herb) Extract comes from fireweed, among the first plants to appear after Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980. It helps calm reactive, breakout-prone skin in the Normal to Oily 3 in 1 Cleanser, DayTime Moisturizer and Evening Moisturizer, and helps calm scalp irritation and dryness in HairCovery® Strengthening & Thickening Hair Serum. See fireweed’s skin and scalp care.
  • Noni and goji, rooted in lava and salt. Morinda Citrifolia (Noni) Fruit Extract comes from one of the first plants to take root on young lava on Hawaii’s Big Island, and Lycium Barbarum (Goji) Fruit Extract from a shrub that grows on salt-crusted desert soil. Together they help protect skin from free radicals in the Normal to Dry 3 in 1 Cleanser, DayTime Moisturizer and Evening Moisturizer and in every shade of LipSense® Cream. Explore noni and goji’s antioxidant care.
  • Desert and savanna survivors. Candelilla wax from the Chihuahuan Desert, jojoba from the Sonoran Desert, argan from the edge of the Sahara, carnauba wax from Brazil’s dry Caatinga, and shea butter and baobab from Africa’s dry savannas soften, moisturize and protect across our lip, eye, skincare and hair formulas. Aloe vera, a succulent of the arid Arabian Peninsula, calms, soothes and hydrates. Meet the desert and savanna botanicals.
  • The survival sugar. Trehalose is a sugar that some resurrection plants, brine shrimp and some tardigrades build up as they dry out; in Detoxifying Oxygen Facial Mask and HairPlenish® Scalp & Hair Serum it holds moisture. See how trehalose holds moisture.
  • Diamond sparkle and volcanic clay. Diamond Powder gives the sparkle in LipSense® Moisturizing Gloss Diamond Kiss and LipSense® Long-Lasting Liquid Lip Color Sheer Berry Diamond. See the two Diamond Powder finishes. Disteardimonium Hectorite and Stearalkonium Hectorite come from hectorite, the clay that forms where volcanic ash is altered by water; they keep ShadowSense®, Glowify® Long-Lasting Eyeshadow Sticks and our cream color smooth. Explore the hectorite clays.

How do I choose among them?

An extreme origin tells you where an ingredient began; the finished formula decides what it does for your skin. Choose by your skin and your goal:

DayTime Moisturizer – Dry makes extremophile skincare tangible: its Myrothamnus Flabellifolia (Resurrection) Leaf/Stem Extract comes from a plant that revives from near-total drought, a concrete expression of our natural technologies with extreme survivability profiles. Meet the resurrection plant in DayTime Moisturizer – Dry.
