What do fermented ingredients do in SeneGence skincare?

Quick answer

Fermented ingredients are made when bacteria, yeasts or fungi transform a plant or other source, and in SeneGence skincare each one has its own job: Lactobacillus Ferment conditions dry-looking skin for a supple feel, and filtered yeast ferment helps a formula hold on to water.

Fermented ingredients are made when microorganisms such as bacteria, yeasts, or fungi transform a plant-derived or other substrate through fermentation. In an INCI ingredient name, Ferment identifies a fermentation-derived material; Ferment Filtrate identifies a fermentation-derived material that was filtered after fermentation. A Lysate is made by breaking open the fermented cells, and a Ferment Extract is an extract taken from the ferment. The name tells you how an ingredient was made; it does not mean living cultures remain in the bottle, and what they do for your skin depends on each finished formula. See how fermentation and INCI naming work, with a peer-reviewed cosmetic-science review and the INCI naming conventions.

How do the four Microbiome formulas differ?

The Microbiome Collection has four formulas, each with its own ferment job. Research on Streptococcus thermophilus explores support for the skin’s own barrier lipids, while the pomegranate ferment, Lactobacillus/Punica Granatum Fruit Ferment Extract, has a place in cosmetic science’s enzyme-led surface refining.

  • Microbiome Correcting Cleanser pairs mild cleansers with two probiotic ferments for a clean, comfortable rinse. Streptococcus Thermophilus Ferment helps balance skin and strengthen its barrier by encouraging the skin’s natural Hyaluronic Acid, and Lactobacillus/Punica Granatum Fruit Ferment Extract, a fermented-pomegranate probiotic, helps brighten, soothe and support the look of elasticity. Research on Streptococcus thermophilus also explores support for the skin’s own barrier lipids, and the pomegranate ferment has a place in cosmetic science’s enzyme-led surface refining. Niacinamide, Gluconolactone, Salicylic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, and Hamamelis Virginiana Water round out the finished cleanser’s oil-aware, soothing, hydrated-rinse, and radiance care. Open the cleanser formula or Microbiome Correcting Cleanser.
  • Microbiome Boosting Serum pairs Lactobacillus Ferment, which conditions dry-looking skin for a supple feel, with water-binding Sodium Hyaluronate, Hyaluronic Acid, and Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer. Sphingomonas Ferment Extract is a fermentation-made ingredient valued in cosmetic science for the silky texture it can lend a formula; Inositol, Caulerpa Lentillifera Extract, Glycerin, Ficus Carica Fruit Extract, and Sodium Polyglutamate complete this lightweight morning-and-evening moisture step. Microbiome Boosting Serum carries SenePlex+® with orchid stem cells: Calanthe Discolor (Ebine) Extract and Orchis Mascula (Orchid) Flower Extract join yeast-and-kelp bioferments in its prebiotic formula. See how Sphingomonas Ferment Extract feels, open the serum formula or Microbiome Boosting Serum.
  • Microbiome Defense Daytime Moisturizer SPF 15 pairs Lactobacillus Ferment with Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate and Sodium Hyaluronate for supple moisture, adds Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Tocopherol, Aronia and Sunflower extracts for antioxidant care, and provides labeled broad-spectrum SPF 15 through Zinc Oxide 6% and Octisalate 5%. Open the daytime formula or Microbiome Defense Daytime Moisturizer SPF 15.
  • Microbiome Restorative Evening Moisturizer brings together Lactobacillus Ferment, which conditions dry-looking skin for a supple feel, Ceramide NP and Cholesterol for moisture-barrier support, and Squalane’s softening touch. Its Lactobacillus/Punica Granatum Fruit Ferment Extract, a fermented-pomegranate probiotic, helps brighten and soothe while supporting the look of elasticity and collagen. The richer finished formula adds extended moisture, softness, barrier comfort, and help improving the appearance of fine lines. Open the evening formula or Microbiome Restorative Evening Moisturizer.

Is the Regimen Set the same as the four Microbiome formulas?

No. The Microbiome SkinCare Regimen Set brings together Microbiome Correcting Cleanser, Microbiome Defense Daytime Moisturizer SPF 15, Microbiome Restorative Evening Moisturizer and EyeCrème, with Microbiome Boosting Serum sold separately. Microbiome SkinCare Regimen Set or EyeCrème, and add Microbiome Boosting Serum when you want one portable hydration step before moisturizer in both routines. See the collection record.

Does SenePlex+ contain ferments?

Yes. SenePlex+® pairs biofermented yeast and kelp, Saccharomyces Cerevisiae (Yeast) Extract and Laminaria Digitata (Kelp) Extract, with orchid stem cells from Calanthe Discolor (Ebine) Extract, plus Orchis Mascula (Orchid) Flower Extract. In the Microbiome Collection it joins Microbiome Boosting Serum, Microbiome Correcting Cleanser, Microbiome Defense Daytime Moisturizer SPF 15 and Microbiome Restorative Evening Moisturizer beside their own ferments; across the line it also runs through Climate Control, GLP Complex™ and SeneCell™. In a 20-day independent clinical study of 33 women ages 19–65, measured by expert clinical grading compared with baseline, Evening Moisturizer – Normal to Dry with SenePlex+® and orchid stem cells accelerated skin cell renewal by 35.7%. Which ferments come from extreme places?

The Normal to Oily skincare carries a Bacillus ferment from an acid-loving microorganism of Spain’s Rio Tinto, studied for more radiant, firmer-looking skin and helping skin hold on to moisture. Find it in 3 in 1 Cleanser - Normal to Oily, DayTime Moisturizer – Normal to Oily and Evening Moisturizer – Normal to Oily. Explore the Rio Tinto ferment.

NeoTight™ Eye Serum’s Bacillus Ferment comes from a salt-tolerant bacterium that lives inside a salt-marsh plant on the salt flats of Es Trenc, Mallorca; this marine biotech helps reduce the look of crow’s feet, dark circles and under-eye bags. It shares its INCI name with the Normal to Oily ferment but comes from a different organism. Read the NeoTight Eye Serum guide.

Alteromonas Ferment Extract begins with a microorganism from deep-sea hydrothermal vents; in Climate Control Body Recovery Mist, this deep-sea biotech helps comfort skin after sun and environmental exposure while supporting skin’s natural defenses. Open the Alteromonas evidence or see every extremophile ingredient SeneGence uses.

Which other SeneGence formulas name ferments?

Beyond the four Microbiome formulas, ferments appear across the line, each named on the label with its own job. Advanced SenePlex+® Renewal Serum with Retinol names Bacillus/Folic Acid Ferment Filtrate Extract beside its Retinol. Bacillus/Folic Acid Ferment Filtrate Extract begins with fermentation in a folic-acid-rich medium. It helps a cosmetic hold on to moisture and resist oxidation, with a skin-conditioning role as well. See the ferment filtrate or open the current formula evidence.

Each formula keeps its own job, so choose by the product and the result you want rather than by the ferment alone.
